The red gold valley, today known as Valpolicella: 240 square Km of hill area at the foot of the Prealpi in the district of Verona, vineyard of Veneto, where Amarone, Valpolicella, Valpolicella Ripasso, Recioto are produced and where the red marble is mined, the passion’s color between Romeo and Juliet, whose love was born in Verona.

Valpolicella is the mother of great wines. His ‘vitivinicola’ vocation was discovered by the Romans. The ancestor of the Recioto, called in the first century D.C. Retico, was well liked by the Emperor August, that’s what Marziale told us. Cassiodoro praises it, he is king Teodorico’s official, who calls it Acinato red like violet (porpora). In red wine coexist sacredness and sense craving, kingship and convivial pleasure. That’s why Ernest Hemingway makes Valpolicella’s wine the protagonist in “Addio alle armi” saying that “he is friendly like a brother” while he is serving it from the carafe. But to be remarkable, even the wines need to have a great past: during the middle ages Valpolicella was called Vallis Polis Caellae, valley of the many cellars, and before that the greek called it the fruit’s valley. All thanks to an almost mediterannean climate, due to the proximity to the Garda Lake, the shelter of Prealpi while the soil made by calcaria chalks, draffs  of Adige’s floods, vulcanic basalts in a field abundant in water given by the streams called “progni” is ideal for the growth of vineyards: Corvina Veronese, Molinara, Rondinella, Oseleta, Negrara, and Corvinone.

Imagine it like an open hand where the stretched backs split three valleys: this is the garden of the veronese province, site elected by the patricians, romans, and nobles through the domain of the Serenissima. Important and numerous are the ancient residences: the one designed by Sanmicheli, and Palladio or where the successors of Dante live; and also the pieve of San Giorgio and San Floriano buildt between the XI and the XII century. Twothousand years of culture and passion for the vinification’s art: Amarone, Valpolicella, Valpolicella Ripasso, Recioto are the sons of this land. The name Valpolicella evokes excellence and the value of the italian product, of an adventure of enthusiastic research, of effort and sacrifice of vinedressers: wines are the feelings of this land.
